PGA Golfer Max Homa Inspired my Coaching

I love golf. It feels weird to say that because not too long ago I thought golf was boring. Now I’m the kind of person that goes to the driving range for fun, participates in a fantasy golf league, and reads golf twitter. If you’re reading this, I promise to talk about my work as a mindset coach but wanted to give you fair warning that this blog will likely contain a lot of golf inspired content.

Which brings me to Max Homa.

Homa has had one hell of a year on the PGA tour. He’s already won twice and had six top 10 finishes. That’s hard to do on its own but is even more impressive when you look at where Homa has come from. He actually lost his PGA tour card at the end of the 2015 season and had to spend 2016 earning his way back on the Korn Ferry tour (analogous to the minor leagues in baseball). He made it back to the PGA in 2017 and then lost his card again! Fast forward to today, the man has SIX PGA tour wins and is ranked #6 in the official world golf rankings.

What made this season so special?

Recently Homa was interviewed on the No Laying Up podcast and spoke about his experience working with a mental coach during the 2022-2023 season. Homa had reservations but ultimately was convinced by his caddie, Joe Greiner, to give working with a mental coach a shot.

Homa shared what Greiner told him:

“I’m not telling you this because I think you’re broken, I’m telling you this because I think it can boost us real high in this game.”

This quote really stuck with me. So often I hear about people seeking out coaching or asking for help when they’re stuck, burned out, or lost. And those are definitely good times to do it!

But similar to Homa, I think about seeking out coaching when you’re ready to level up. That is, when you have a dream or goal that lights you on fire and you’re ready to transform your mindset and ways of being in pursuit of playing big. Like Homa says, at a certain point the pros can only improve so much on the technical aspects of golf. What’s left is the work on your inner game.

Have you read all the business books, tried all the frameworks, and listened to hundreds of podcasts and still felt like something’s missing as a leader or business owner? I invite you to take a step back from the tactics and look somewhere new: your inner game. Coaching might just unlock your version of Homa’s 2022-2023 season.
